Charges Filed in Assault on Juvenile at Canton Mosque
Authorities haven't disclosed a motive in the alleged assault, but said it was not a hate crime.

CANTON, MI — A 65-year-old Hamtramck man turned himself in to authorities after allegedly assaulting a juvenile with a dangerous weapon at a mosque in Canton, according to reports.
Hobibur Rahman was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, a four-year felony, and aggravated assault, a one-year misdemeanor, according to a news release from Canton police.
Police began investigating the incident at Masjid Bilal, a mosque Ridge Road, north of Cherry Hill, on Aug. 10, according to the news release.

The motive is unclear, but Public Safety Director Joshua Meier told The Canton Observer that “it is not a hate crime — nothing close to that.”
“It’s an isolated incident,” he said. “There are no racial issues involved in it.”

The juvenile is a student at the mosque’s school, Madrasah Bilal, WDIV-TV reported.
Rahman was arraigned Wednesday in 35th District Court, where his bond was set at $10,000. His next court date is Aug. 26 for a probable cause hearing to determine if he will stand trial in Wayne County Circuit Court.
