College Gear to Inspire Detroit Kids
Canton Teen Collected and Distributed Thousands of College Gear for Detroit Kids
Anna Sun of Canton, a high school senior at Detroit Country Day School, has recently received hundreds of t-shirt donations along with thousands of other items from colleges across the country. She made the college gear donation event on Friday, September 7 at the Detroit Institute of Arts to the kids in Detroit to motivate them to work towards a goal and a dream college. Over 60 K-12 students, who were majority 1st generation college students, participated in the event.
As a founder and director of The Little Stars Foundation (www.thelittlestars.org), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable youth organization, Anna wanted to encourage more Detroit high schoolers to go to college. While doing a fighting childhood hunger project partnered with Sodexo Stop Hunger Foundation, she realized that education is part of the solution for kids from underprivileged families. As a result, she contacted many university admissions offices to ask for t-shirts and other items to help inspire local kids. Over the last few weeks, Anna has received hundreds of packages containing t-shirts, pamphlets, pens, and even toothbrushes.
