Community Foundation of Plymouth Grant Sends Kids to Band Camp

The Plymouth Fife & Drum Corps (PFDC) is going to band camp, thanks to a grant from the Community Foundation of Plymouth (CFP).

A member of the CFP Advisory Committee, Abe Munfakh, presented PFDC Ways & Means Chairman, Lisa LiGreci, with a $2,800 check in December, which will be used to subsidize band camp for all of the Corps members. 

“Band camp is essential to prepare the Corps for the 2014 performance season, especially for our new recruits," LiGreci said. "Thanks to the Community Foundation of Plymouth for making this all possible.”

PFDC Musical Director, Jim Predhomme spoke of the importance of band camp.

“Band camp is an exciting and important time for the Corps each year," he said. "It's our first opportunity to get outside and start marching. It's also  the first time our drummers can put their practice pads aside and actually play their drums. The Corps members truly begin to form a cohesive unit during the band camp weekend.” 

PFDC Band Camp is a three-day weekend held in April at the Michigan Christian Youth Camp in Attica, Michigan.

The $2,800 grant will cover the cost of food, lodging and instructor salaries for the entire Corps. 

The Plymouth Fife & Drum Corps is an internationally renowned world class Fife & Drum Corps made up of students age 12 – 18 from Plymouth and surrounding communities.

Practicing year round, its members are dedicated to preserving the ancient arts of color guard, fifing, and drumming. They average 40-50 live performances during parades, patriotic celebrations, and other civic events throughout Michigan, Ohio and Canada.

At the close of the summer performance season, the Corps tours to historical landmarks. This year they will travel to Virginia to participate in a wreath laying ceremony at The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington Cemetery. Other 
scheduled performances include, Fort Ligonier near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Mt. Vernon, home of George Washington, Colonial Williamsburg, and many other historic landmarks in the area.
