Effort to Build Skate Park Gaining Steam

Matt Young, 28, has narrowed down several site options for a skate park to serve enthusiasts in the Plymouth-Canton area.

A 28-year-old Plymouth Township resident leading a petition drive for the development of a skate park said he’s already gathered about 600 signatures 400 “likes” on a Facebook page and 200 Instagram followers – signals he says show the effort has support.

Matt Young said in a YouTube video compiled in support of the project that the township has provided for other recreational pursuits, but has overlooked opportunities for skateboard enthusiasts.

Young has discussed the concept with city, county, township and state officials, and is now developing a list of site options, according to the Observer & Eccentric.

Young said he and his 5-year-old daughter came up with the idea for a skate park in February. Since then, his organization has gained 501(c)3 status and is putting together a board of trustees.

He skated as a youngster, then picked up the sport with his daughter. “Fell back in love,” he said. “Now she skates with me.”

A June 21 fundraising event is planned at an outdoor location to be determined in Plymouth. The theme will be “Love at First Push,” and free lessons by certified instructors will be offered as part of the event.
