I-275 Project Pauses For Winter, Lanes Reopen Friday

WAYNE COUNTY, MI — Construction crews reopened all northbound and southbound lanes on Interstate 275 from Will Carleton Road to 6 Mile Road on Friday, the Michigan Department of Transportation said.

MDOT also said the work on the 5 Mile Road bridge was expected to be completed and reopened by Friday.

Although the four-year construction project is pausing for the winter, MDOT said there will be shoulder work on southbound I-275 from 5 Mile Road to Northline Road, along with signal work at the ramp interchanges at Ecorse Road, Michigan Avenue and Ann Arbor Road, over the next couple of months.

Construction crews are expected to resume the project in late February 2022, MDOT said.

The Interstate I-275 project consumes 24 miles of the highway between Will Carleton Road and 6 Mile Road in Wayne County. It is being construction in four phases, which lasts through 2025.

The first phase was completed, which was repaving concrete from Will Carleton Road to Northline Road. Other work throughout the year was done in preparation for 2022 rebuilding, which included widening shoulders for future temporary lane use and building 27 crossovers in the median for entrance and exit ramps.

The next phases include 14 miles of rebuilding concrete pavement, rebuilding concrete pavement of parts or all of four interchanges, improving 65 bridges and a retaining wall, drainage improvements, sign replacements, traffic signal modernizations, intelligent transportation system (ITS) improvements, sidewalk improvements that are compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and tree replacements.
