Inkster Imposes Tax to Pay Police Brutality Settlement

The nearly $1.4 million settlement in a police brutality lawsuit will cost Inkster taxpayers one-time hit on their next tax statement.

The Detroit Free Press reports taxpayers will see a 6.45 mill levy on the summer tax bills to pay the $1,377,500 settlement to Floyd Dent, who sued the city after he was severely beaten in a traffic stop in January. Inkster doesn’t have the cash to pay the settlement outright.

The tax will cost the owner of a home valued at $55,400, the median value of houses in Inkster, about $178.67. More than a third – 38 percent – of taxpayers live below the poverty line. The median income in Inkster is $26,512, according to census bureau estimates.
