Kmart Closing Opens Opportunity in Plymouth Township

A multi-tenant retail development could anchor the community's most prominent gateway.

PLYMOUTH TOWNSHIP, MI — Kmart’s shrinking presence in Michigan is providing opportunity in Plymouth Township, where a store scheduled to be shuttered by the end of the 2017 could house multiple retail businesses, township officials say.

Farmington Hills-based Sakwa Properties plans to buy the 108,000 Super Kmart building on Ann Arbor Road and redevelop it, The Plymouth Observer reported. The redevelopment could also include a couple of outbuildings that could house restaurants.

Grand Sakwa’s William Eisenberg, who has formed a limited liability company, Parck Plaza Shopping Center, said the proposed Plymouth Maketplace development is “really at a very preliminary stage at this point.”

“We just think it’s a great spot and we hope the redevelopment will be successful,” he said.

The Plymouth Township Planning Commission recommended planned unit development status for the property earlier this month, and the Board of Trustees will consider it at a Sept. 13 meeting.

In an email to The Observer, Township Supervisor Shannon Price said the proposed development in the community’s most prominent gateway “will unify the design elements to reflect the character of the Ann Arbor Road corridor.”
