Man Threatens Canton Township Senior Living Facility: Police

Canton Police said there has been a recent uptick in randomized threats to public establishments made by phone or social media.

CANTON TOWNSHIP, MI — A Detroit man is facing charges after threatening a Canton Township senior living facility earlier this month, accordion to police.

Rhyon Colbi Maples, 25, was charged with one count of false report or threat of terrorism. He was placed in jail on a $250,000 cash bond. If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison.

Police said the senior living facility (which police did not identify) received phone calls on Dec. 2 threatening violence. Investigators used phone records and traced the calls back to Maples, police said.

Canton Police Chief Chad Baugh said there has been a recent uptick in randomized threats to public establishments made by phone or social media. He said public establishments, such as churches, senior living facilities and private schools have all been threatened, and are all being investigating.

"Every instance of a violent threat occurring in Canton undergoes thorough vetting and investigation by the police department. Individuals participating in such acts need to be aware that digital footprints do exist, enabling investigators to uncover attempts to conceal identity," Baugh said in a news release. "The Canton Police Department will continue to investigate and seek prosecution on such acts, regardless of the actual intent of the suspected individual."
