Check Out Model Trains at Art in the Park
A modular railroad will be displayed by the Michigan G Gauge Operations Club in Plymouth this weekend, educating festivalgoers about railroad history and operations.
The Michigan G Gauge Operations Club, MGGOC, will make its way to Plymouth this weekend to showcase its portable modular railway on the west side of Kellogg Park during Art in the Park.
The MGGOC is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating the public about railroad history and operations, as well as about indoor and outdoor operation of 1.76 inch gauge model railroads. The club visits model train shows, flea markets, museums, malls, and summer fairs, such as Art in the Park.
Gordon Perrin, MGGOC’s secretary, said, “It is an opportunity for the MGGOC to set up and operate its portable modular railway layout, and display the art and craft of ‘large scale’ modeling. It also is an opportunity for the club to recruit new members from the Southeast Michigan Area.”

The modular railway will be an interactive experience for festivalgoers, allowing them to enjoy learning about railroads.
“They can view the layout as it is operated and ask members questions about ‘large scale’ modeling indoors and outdoors. Additional information will be posted at the layout regarding scale and gauge,” Perrin said. “Occasionally a youngster showing more than casual interest will be allowed to operate a train under the tutelage of a club member.”

Perrin believes festivalgoers find MGGOC’s display appealing because people often have memories involving railroads.
“Our past experience at train shows and flea markets indicates that public displays of operating model railroads is well received because it reminds the viewer of their childhood experiences with real railroads and toy trains,” Perrin said.
