Murder Suspect Allegedly Steals, Crashes Police Car

Detroit police were conducting a stakeout in Westland when the suspect allegedly took off in a police car.


WESTLAND, MI – A homicide suspect stole and promptly crashed a police car after leading authorities on a chase Monday afternoon, authorities said.

Detroit police located the suspect in a Nov. 16 Detroit murder case in the area of Wayne and Joy roads and were conducting a stakeout, according to reports on WDIV-TV and WXYZ-TV. When a Westland police officer got out of his vehicle to assist Detroit officers in arresting the man, the suspect broke free and took off in the Westland officer’s vehicle.

A chase ended in a crash in the area of Warren and Lotz roads and the suspect was apprehended, police said.

The suspect will be turned over to Detroit police, who are expected to seek murder charges, but he also faces car theft charges, police said.

A bystander injured at the crash site was transported to a nearby hospital, where he is reportedly in stable condition.
