Founded by Mark Weinstein in 1996, Between the Lines is the largest and longest running LGBT (Lesbian-Gay-Bisexual-Transgender) publication in Michigan. They also endorsed Nancy Skinner for the democratic primary in Michigans 11th district. She is also the only woman on the ballot for August 5th, and the only democrat to have run for a political office before, nearly upset a 14 year incumbent in 2006, despite being outspent by 8:1.
“Gay marriage, as it was termed back then, was not politically expedient," says Skinner, "but I explained that there was this thing in the Constitution called the 14th Amendment which guaranteed equal protection under the laws, and regardless of anyone’s personal opinions, the Court’s would have to uphold the US Constitution.”
"Nancy has been a long-time supporter of the LGBT Community and Equality – in Marriage and in the Workplace. Nancy didn’t wait for public opinion polls to shift; she pronounced her support of marriage equality ten years ago, when support for “gay marriage” was not an easy position for anyone running for office at that time to take. That is the kind of courage that shifts public opinion and has helped the LGBT Community pass a tipping point. We supported her in 2006 in her near-upset of Republican Joe Knollenberg and we support Nancy now, as her perseverance will help Nancy cross that tipping point to become our next Congresswoman in Michigan’s Congressional Delegation.” says Jan Stevenson, publisher of Between the Lines.

Aside from the legal arguments, Skinner was focused on the moral issue/bigger picture of the situation. "“who we love is our choice and marriage is our expression of that choice. We need more people caring for each other and so many gay couples are seeking to adopt children who need exactly that; someone to love and care for them”.
The endorsement comes on the eve of the largest Gay Pride event in Detroit, Pride Fest, where Skinner for Congress marched on Sunday, June 8th.

“I’m thrilled to see the progress the LGBT community has made and that marriage equality is being seen as the morally correct choice, in state after state and in public opinion polls. I think what is right is always right, and it takes people who seek to lead or run for office to speak out; the polls will follow. That is what I will continue to do as your Congresswoman if voters elect me in the 11th District."
