Plymouth-Canton Figure Skaters Qualify for State Competition

The "B" team of the Plymouth-Canton Figure Skating team will compete in Ann Arbor next month.

Members of the Plymouth-Canton high school figure skating team are headed to state finals in Ann Arbor next month after taking third place at districts Wednesday at the .

The 26-member team with skaters from all three high schools at the Plymouth-Canton Educational Park are divided into three levels  – "A," "B" and "C." The "A" team is the most advanced, the "B" team is intermediate and the "C" team is the beginning level.

The "B" team took third place at the District 3 competition with a total score of 21 points. That score, combined with their scores from the other two competitions this season put the team at tied for third place in the district overall with the Lakes Area team, which includes all the Walled Lake and Waterford high schools and Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic School.

The top three teams in each level of each district qualify for states each year.

"We are just so happy," said Plymouth-Canton coach Suzie Smith. "There was some doubting going on, and in the end it came right down to the last few points."

The Plymouth-Canton "A" team placed fifth in the district competition and the "C" team placed sixth. There are a total of eight teams in District 3.

Northville's "A" team, United Farmington's "B" team and Ladywood's "C" team all took first place at the competition.

The state competition will be held March 26 and 27 at the Ice Cube Arena in Ann Arbor.
