People fortunate enough to meet the Ontario Hockey League’s Plymouth Whalers discover the team is polite in nature and cheerfully helpful in disposition.

To that end, the Whalers are gearing up for their seventh annual Pink Out! For Breast Cancer Awareness on Sat. Nov. 1 at 7:05 pm at Compuware Arena against the Kingston Frontenacs.

The Whalers will be wearing specially designed, limited edition pink jerseys for the game. The jerseys will be part of a silent auction with the proceeds donated to the Karmanos Cancer Institute.

The ice surface for the game at Compuware Arena will be pink, courtesy of Plymouth Whalers corporate sponsor Hines-Park Lincoln. That’s a first for the arena, which opened in 1996 and a first for the Whalers Pink Out!, which started in 2008.

The pink ice at Compuware Arena is scheduled to be ready by Monday Oct. 27.

Hines Park Lincoln owner Ryan Kolb is also dying his hair pink after his entire staff donated money to make it happen.

The Whalers annual Pink Out! For Breast Cancer Awareness has grown into a week-long event. It starts with the Whalers getting their hair dyed pink as a team.

This year’s team group-pinking happens on Monday, Oct. 27 at 10:30 am at Indigo Spa, Salon and Boutique, located at 50545 Cherry Hill Road in Canton. Plymouth Whalers players report in two shifts, with older players going in the morning and younger players in the afternoon after practice.

Media are cordially invited to capture the fun images of hockey players getting their hair pinked up. Contact Indigo Spa, Salon and Boutique at (734) 961-3245.

Wherever they go the rest of the week, the Whalers will have pink hair as a not-so-silent reminder to show their support towards breast cancer awareness. The subsequent reaction of nearly everyone seeing the Whalers in pink hair during Pink Out! week is one of support towards a cause that affects everyone.

The Whalers visit Karmanos Cancer Institute on Tuesday, Oct. 28 at 10 am. Plymouth Whalers players – in their pink hair and the special edition jerseys - will be visiting patients of all ages in a gesture of support and good will.

Also on Tues. Oct. 28. several Whalers will visit WYCD 99.5 Detroit Country and morning host Rachael Hunter - a Plymouth Whalers season ticket holder.

On Wed. Oct. 29, the Whalers will be working as waiters from 5-7:30 pm at CJ’s Brewing Company at Compuware Arena. All tips will be donated to Karmanos Cancer Institute.

The Whalers get on the ice on Thurs. Oct. 30, traveling to Erie, PA to take on the top-rated Otters at Erie Insurance Arena. Although the team will wear their road-blue jerseys for the game, the team’s hair will remain pink.

Move on to the Pink Out! game on Saturday, Nov. 1 and fans will have the opportunity to sign a Banner of Hope, courtesy of Blue Cross-Blue Shield of Michigan. Special edition Pink Out! signs will be offered by Plymouth Physical Therapy Specialists.

Plymouth and Kingston played an emotional, hard-hitting game last season at Compuware Arena with the Frontenacs getting a goal in the final minute of regulation in a 3-2 victory.

Ironically, the heartfelt emotion of the Whalers annual Pink Out! goes much further than a 60-minute game on a Saturday night in November.

Sponsers of this season’s Pink Out! include Meijer, Plymouth Physical Therapy Specialists, Indigo Spa & Salon, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and 99.5 WYCD Detroit’s Country.
