Plymouth/Canton Community Steps Up To Benefit Veteran's Family In Need

As many folks know, the VFW Post 6695 here in Plymouth hosts car shows every Wednesday evening. They are fun, you get to see some great rides, there is always good music, and great food readily available.

A couple weeks ago, the car show was a little different though, and a lot more important. That car show became a benefit for the family of Gary Pritchard. Mr. Pritchard served our country in the Vietnam War, and is a member of the Plymouth-Canton Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 528. Gary's son, Wayne passed away suddenly, leaving behind 4 young children, and his wife, who was a stay at home Mom.

Not only is this an unimaginable loss for this family, but there was a suddenly huge financial burden to bear as well. One of the things I respect so much about these folks at the VFW & VVA is the way that they circle the wagons, and support their fellow veterans in times of need. As VVA President Ron King very aptly put it last night at the VVA membership meeting, “We take care of our own.”

Well, they most certainly do take care of their own, but in this case, the good folks in the Plymouth/Canton community stepped up and took care of OUR own. I don't have the exact tally, but I know that our veterans, the Ladies Auxiliary, and our community stepped up and raised over $5,000 for the Pritchard family, and they can use every cent of that money.

It makes me proud to live in such a tight knit community, where on a moments notice, folks come out and give a hand up to one of their own. I ran into a couple from Canton that I know, Melissa & John, and they had read about the benefit. It didn't surprise me to see them, because they always seem to be around when folks need help, but it turns out that John actually knew Mr. Pritchard from years ago, and they just wanted to show up and help out. We are truly a tight knit community.

So Mr. King just wanted to thank everybody involved in helping out at the car show for the Pritchard family, and also thank everybody who showed up, and generously donated at this event.  I know that it really means a lot to our veterans to see how this community shows up to support them.

The Cruz'n 528 Car Show continues today, and every single Wednesday that Mama Nature allows, from 5-8 PM. All the great rides will be there, all the great food will be there, Koz will be spinning the oldies, the Ladies Auxiliary will be rocking the “Buck-A-Pop” table with delicious sweets, some lucky person, will hit the 50/50 raffle, and you'll likely run into someone you know. It doesn't get much better than that...

The Cruzin 528 Car Show will be in the parking lot of the Plymouth VFW Post 6695 on Mill Street, just north of Ann Arbor Road, from 5 to 8 PM.
