Uber Driver with No Headlights Stopped, But He's Not the One in Trouble

Marijuana rolled from the vehicle when Canton police stopped it, and their search turned up a lot more than just pot.

CANTON, MI – Police in Canton pulled over a Chrysler PT Cruiser that didn’t have operable headlights on a recent night, but it’s not the 70-year-old Uber driver who’s in trouble.

When the vehicle was stopped about 11 p.m. on April 6 on Belleville Road near Michigan Avenue, the tell-tale odor of marijuana rolled from the vehicle, The Canton Observer reports.

A 24-year-old passenger from Detroit tried to explain the pot was medicinal and that he smokes it to ease his back pain, but he didn’t have a medical marijuana card.

That was only the start of the problems for the man, who said he’d ordered the Uber cab because he doesn’t have a driver’s license and needed to get to a birthday party.

Police discovered the passenger several outstanding warrants — one for speeding from Huntington Woods, and two others from Ferndale and Hazel Park for driving with a suspended license.

The problems for the passenger continued to mount.

Police also discovered a retail bag with three new iPhones the man said he had purchased as gifts for relatives, four gift cards, two credit cards, a small bag of marijuana and a digital scale the guy claimed he uses to make sure he doesn’t get shorted when he buys pot.

One of the credit cards was issued to someone else. The passenger claimed it belonged to a friend who had left it in his car, even though he had already told police he doesn’t drive because he doesn’t have a driver’s license.

Police busted him for possession of marijuana and illegally having the credit card. The gift cards were also confiscated, and police are continuing their investigation.
