Woman Believed To Be Michigan's Oldest Resident Dies

The woman survived the 1918 influenza pandemic, the Great Depression, World War II and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bonita Gibson, who was believed to be the oldest person in Michigan, has died at the age of 114, according to the John N. Santeiu and Son Inc. funeral home.

"Bonita was the oldest living person in the State of Michigan. She was the second oldest in the United States, and the seventh oldest in the world," her obituary states.

She is survived by her only son, Richard, and grandchildren Scott, Stacy and Kevin. She was also the great-grandmother of Ryan, Randy, Russell, Justin, Brandy, and D'Artagnan, and the great-great-grandmother of 10.

Gibson survived the 1918 influenza pandemic, the Great Depression, World War II and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Gibson was born in Missouri and spent most of her life living in Idaho Falls with her husband, Kenneth, who was a potato broker for 35 years.

She moved to Michigan after her husband died. They were married for 72 years.

She spent her final years living at Waltonwood Carriage Park in Canton.

Visitation and services are scheduled for March 24 at John N. Santeiu & Son in Garden City. The burial will take place in Idaho Falls, Idaho.
