📰 News we're reading

1. Oakland County woman accused of selling homes she didn't own pleads no contest to fraud (clickondetroit.com) — A 28-year-old Pontiac resident has pleaded no contest to nine charges tied to a scheme involving homes in Pontiac that she allegedly agreed to sell but did not own. Prosecutors say multiple buyers paid her for land contracts and titles but never received keys, access, or ownership, with sentencing set for June 11.

2. Proposed cemetery receiving pushback in Pontiac (theoaklandpress.com) — A proposed Muslim cemetery on a 28-acre parcel in Pontiac is facing strong opposition from nearby Stonegate Pointe residents, who say their concerns are about property values and environment, not religion. The site needs a special exception permit, and city officials note it complies with zoning while trying to mediate between the developer and neighbors. There is no set timeline yet for seeking planning commission approval.

3. Oakland County Homeowners Could Qualify for a Home Improvement Loan (oaklandcounty115.com) — Oakland County is offering interest-free home improvement loans up to $23,000, but Pontiac residents must now work directly with the City of Pontiac instead of the county program. The loans cover major repairs and accessibility upgrades, with no monthly payments and repayment due only when you leave your home. Several nearby communities, including Pontiac, are listed as non-participants in the county-run program.

4. Hundreds protest in Romulus against proposal to convert warehouse into ICE detention center (newsfromthestates.com) — A large protest in Romulus challenged plans to turn a warehouse into a 500-bed ICE detention center, drawing state and federal Democratic officials. An Oakland County activist warned that ICE detentions have risen in the Pontiac area since August, raising concerns about how any new facility could affect local immigrant families and neighbors.
