The 17th Annual Lobster Boil Was A Great Success!

Thank you to the community!!

The Rochester Junior Woman’s Club is grateful to all of the community members who came out to support their 17th annual Lobster Boil on Saturday, September 26th. The event was a great success, selling more than 1100 lobsters!

The live New England lobsters were flown in fresh early Saturday morning and members of RJWC cooked, wrapped and had the lobsters hot and ready for customers at the Older Persons’ Commission drive-thru site.

“Customers pre-ordered their lobsters and then they just drive up to the OPC at their chosen time and their lobsters are given to them! They don’t even have to get out of their car,” said Tanya Armitage-Edgeworth, co-chair of this year’s Lobster Boil. “And, if you happened to miss out on ordering your lobsters this year, make sure to mark your calendar for the last Saturday in September each year!” Armitage-Edgeworth chaired the event with club members Lee deMontigny and co-chairs Karen Geibel and Lisa Geiger.

The club members also received help from Boy Scout Troop #60 who came again this year to help set up and tear down the event site.

Proceeds from this years’ Lobster Boil went to benefit The Friends of the Paint Creek Trail, RARA’s SCAMP program, Rochester Symphony Orchestra and Vista Maria’s Wing Program and Older Persons’ Commission (OPC).

The funds from the Lobster Boil will help to support specific projects for the recipients;

The Friends of the Paint Creek Trail’s will use their funding to support the Paint Creek Trail Educational Walkway Project which will be located adjacent to the Paint Creek Trail north of Tienken Road in Rochester Hills. The 1/4 mile walkway will be surfaced with finely crushed asphalt which is being recycled from the Tienken Road Construction Project. Along the walkway, they will have educational displays about native plants vs invasive species, trail history, wildlife, the Paint Creek, and trail etiquette. We’ll also build native plant gardens, and install a few benches and trash receptacles.

RARA’s funding will support SCAMP, their summer day camp program for persons with special needs, ages 5-27, in our community. Fun, enriching activities and outings are provided for the campers along with well needed respite for their families throughout the summer months.

The funding to the Rochester Symphony Orchestra will be used to help support their annual concert series, performed at St. Paul United Methodist Church. The RSO, led by highly acclaimed conductor Zeljko (Bill) Milicevic, is a major contributor to the active cultural and arts environment in the Greater Rochester Area.

And, Vista Maria will be putting the funds towards their Wings Program for victims of Human Trafficking: to provide treatment and housing to domestic victims of human trafficking.

The club is also planning two other events to raise funds for their recipients. The first is their annual “Spring Highlights” Luncheon and Shopping Boutique for March 19, 2016 at the Royal Park Hotel. As well as the “Haute to Trot” Kentucky Derby event planned for May 7, 2016.

For almost 60 years the Rochester Junior Woman’s Club has contributed to the growth and vitality of the community through volunteer service and donation of funds to local charities and organizations. Since its inception, the Rochester Junior Woman’s Club has donated more than 1 million hours of community service and raised more than $860,000 to support the local community.
