OAKLAND COUNTY, MI — Two of the three men who were arrested in connection with the killing of an Oakland County deputy last Saturday had a previous run-in with police, according to a Detroit News report.

One of the men, an 18-year-old, fled officers during a March traffic stop in Troy, before he was eventually arrested and charged with carrying a concealed weapon and fleeing from police, according to the report.

The man was initially given a $111,000 bond, but a judge later reduced that amount to $20,000 after he said the man complied with court instructions, according to the report.

Police said Reckling was among three auto theft unit deputies following a stolen Chevy Equinox in Detroit that was taken from the Red Oaks Waterpark in Oakland County sometime between 1 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. last Saturday, according to police.

While Reckling was following the Equinox, the SUV suddenly stopped and the people inside the SUV got out and opened fire, striking Reckling multiple times, including in the head and torso, according to the sheriff's office.

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard called the shooting "an ambush."

Reckling leaves behind a pregnant wife and three daughters, ages 5, 4, and 1, according to the sheriff's office.

Reckling was hired in April 2015 and was assigned to the Rochester Hills substation before he was recently transferred to the auto theft unit, according to the sheriff's office.

Reckling was honored multiple times by the sheriff’s office, including commendations for life-saving, meritorious service and professional excellence.

"This agency is crushed," Bouchard said. "You can see it in their eyes how soul crushing this is."
