Man Killed, Woman Hurt; 1 Suspect In Custody After Great Lakes Crossing Shooting: Reports

UPDATE:The shooting began in the food court and seems to have stemmed from a prior incident between the man and the suspect, ABC 7 reported.

AUBURN HILLS, MI — A 20-year-old man is dead and a 19-year-old woman was wounded in a shooting at Great Lakes Crossing on Saturday, ABC 7 Detroit reported.

The mall is described on Michigan.org as the state's largest mall, with more than 170 shops, restaurants and entertainment options, including manufacturer outlets, full-service restaurants, a 1,000-seat food court, and a movie theater – all situated in a single-level.

The shooting began in the food court area of the mall and seems to have stemmed from a prior incident between the man and the suspect, police told ABC 7.

Alexis Cook, who was working at the time of the shooting, told the outlet there was "a lot of commotion" and "a lot of people running," and things were "getting pushed over, just everybody frantically screaming, people were pulling their kids out of the strollers."

Police told clickondetroit.com they received reports of gunfire in the food court around 5:20 p.m., and when officers arrived, they found a 20-year-old Pontiac man who had died after getting shot inside a clothing store near the Rainforest Cafe, as well as a 19-year-old with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.

The alleged shooter, a 22-year-old man from Detroit, is cooperating with officers, the outlet reported.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s office said preliminary investigation shows the two men involved had argued at the mall earlier, and when they crossed paths later, a fight broke out, with the shooter claiming he was jumped, according to the outlet.

CBS News is reporting that authorities are looking for another man they say was also involved in the fight.

Police say this was an isolated incident and that no other injuries were reported.

The sheriff’s office announced investigators were assisting the Auburn Hills Police Department with an "active investigation" as of 10 p.m. in a post to X.

Officials are advising residents to avoid the area to allow emergency personnel and investigators to safely conduct their investigation.
