City of Pontiac Participates in 'Youth in Government' Luncheon

Pontiac, Mich - May 12, 2023- On May 9th, 2023, Pontiac Mayor Tim Griemel, Deputy Mayor Khalfani Stephens, City Council President Mike McGinnis, and Oakland County Commissioner Angela Powell, supported the 31st "Youth in Government & Business Program" Luncheon with Pontiac Middle School, Pontiac High School, and International Technical Academy students at Welcome Missionary Baptist Church.

This program has transformed into a long-term initiative for students to get a taste of government, business, and pursue excellence in the Pontiac education system.

City Council President McGinnis led this year’s event providing mentorship and informative insight regarding career goals and government practices. Deputy Mayor Stephens and Oakland County Commissioner Powell also spoke as former ‘Youth in Government’ participants who attended Pontiac High School.

“Youth In Government’s presence at Pontiac City Hall was splendid this year,” said Mike McGuinness, Pontiac City Council President. “The students came alive when they got to delve into issues impacting them as Pontiac residents that they cared about. Civic participation is key for any community to thrive — and Youth In Government helps plant the seeds for students to be engaged throughout their lives. It was a great experience helping to coordinate the City Hall site visit.”

Pontiac School District, Comerica Bank, and Greater Pontiac Community Coalition sponsored this year’s program.

In addition, school organizers, Ann Natoski, Chris Prentice, and Marcus McDaniels took part in coordinating 2023’s luncheon.

Pontiac government is assuring residents that they are progressively moving forward in ways to uplift their community.
