PONTIAC, MI — James and Jennifer Crumbley turned down a request to help their son fight his life sentence without parole, according to reports, citing court records.

Ethan Crumbley, who was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the deadly Oxford school shooting, asked for access to confidential pre-sentencing reports for his parents earlier this month, but they turned him down, according to reports.

Lawyers for Ethan also asked a judge to release the records under a protective order so they can review them without releasing the information to the public, but lawyers for the couple asked a judge to reject that motion, according to reports.

A judge is expected to rule on that matter soon.

The confidential reports could help explain Ethan's upbringing and the family's home life to further examine his mental state prior to the shooting.

Both Jennifer and James Crumbley were each found guilty of four counts of involuntary manslaughter in connection with the deadly Oxford school shooting. Prosecutors said the couple ignored disturbing warning signs from the son leading up to the deadly shooting.

Both parents were each sentenced to 10 to 15 years in prison, the maximum sentenced allowed in their case. They are the first set of parents held criminally responsible for a deadly school shooting.

Ethan Crumbley pleaded guilty to four counts of murder, one count of terrorism, seven counts of assault with intent to murder and 12 counts of possession of a firearm while in the commission of a felony in connection with the deadly Oxford school shooting that happened on Nov. 30, 2021.

Crumbley, who turned 18 last month, was moved to a northern Michigan prison where he'll spend the remainder of his life sentence.

The four students killed in the shooting were 14-year-old Hana St. Juliana, 16-year-old Tate Myre, 17-year-old Madisyn Baldwin and 17-year-old Justin Shilling.
