PONTIAC, MI — Nicole Beausoleil, the mother of 17-year-old Madisyn Baldwin, who was one of four students fatally shot at Oxford High School, said her daughter had "pure talent" in poetry and art, along with a smile that lit up the room when she walked into.

"The passion that she had for everything and everyone was remarkable," Beausoleil said.

Speaking Tuesday morning in front of Jennifer and James Crumbley at their sentencing hearing in a Pontiac courtroom, Beausoleil said she keeps thinking back to the moment during Jennifer's trial when Jennifer testified that she wouldn’t do anything different.

"While your son was hearing voices and asking for help, I was helping Madisyn pick out her senior classes. While you were purchasing a gun for your son and leaving it unlocked, I was helping her finish her college essays," Beausoleil said. "When you left without hesitation and not taking him home, I was worried if she’d be OK driving in her first snowfall of the season and if she brought a coat."

Beausoleil added that while the Crumbleys were talking to each other about where the gun was, she was trying to contact her daughter.

"While you were running away from your son and your responsibilities, I was forced to do the worst possible thing a parent could do," Beausoleil said. "I was forced to say goodbye to my Madisyn."

Beausoleil asked the judge to sentence Jennifer and James Crumbley to the maximum number of years, because of the "life sentence" she'll face without her daughter.

"The lack of compassion you have shown is disgusting," Beausoleil said. "Not only did your son kill my daughter, but you both did, as well. The words ‘involuntary’ shouldn’t be part of your offense."

Jennifer and James Crumbley were sentenced to 10-15 years for their role in the deadly Oxford school shooting. The couple's son, Ethan Crumbley, who is now 17, was sentenced to life without parole last December after he admitted to the shooting.
