An Evening in the Garden will Educate and Entertain

Enjoy a family friendly evening touring a Children's Garden and learning about beneficial insects!

The Rochester Garden Club is hosting its annual Evening in the Garden on Wednesday, July 27 at 6:30 pm.  There is no charge for this family friendly evening that starts with a stroll through the award winning Children's Garden at Van Hoosen Farm.  Garden club members will be on hand to explain the features of the garden they work so hard to make beautiful.  Along with eye-popping gardens full of lovely flowers, the garden boasts hands-on activities such as a sundial that lets you tell time with your body, patchwork checkers, hopscotch and a school house replica complete with working bell and water pump.  Don't miss the life size dairy cow sculpture that recalls the dairy farm heritage of Van Hoosen Farm.  Since the main focus of the evening is to learn about the importance of beneficial and pollinating insects in our world, be sure to check out the butterfly garden and the newly installed bee and insect habitat.

After touring the garden, come into the newly renovated Calf Barn at 7 pm for light refreshments and to hear our featured speaker entertain and enlighten us about the importance of the insects in our world.  Elly Maxwell is the entomologist at Dow Gardens in Midland, MI and is a bug enthusiast! She will share her knowledge of insects with colorful slides and entertaining tales, and will teach us how to welcome these beneficial creatures into our yards as she presents her program, Gardening for Pollinators.

An Evening in the Garden is a lovely way to spend a summer evening, surrounded by flowers, friends and fun.  The first 25 families who attend will receive a free milkweed plant to encourage pollinators to their own gardens.  There will also be a sale of native plants, garden art, and work gloves.  The program will run from 6:30 to about 8:00 pm, at the Rochester Hills Museum at Van Hoosen Farms, 1005 Van Hoosen Rd, Rochester Hills, 48307. Visit the Rochester Garden Club website at RochesterGardenClub.org for more information.
