Fall Prevention Day Brings Awareness and Helps with Safety

Home Care helps to assist individuals live independently longer with aides and nurses to help along the way.

The 7th annual Falls Prevention Awareness Day is observed nationally on September 23, 2014. This year’s theme, Strong Today, Falls Free® Tomorrow, seeks to raise awareness about how to prevent fall-related injuries among older adults.

Since Falls Prevention Awareness Day was first observed in 2008, has grown from 11 states to 47 states and the District of Columbia. Crittenton Home Care offers help and support throughout the month with tips on how to prevent falls in the home. Keeping your home safe is an essential part of preventing falls.

As we age, certain abilities become compromised and it is important to continually re-evaluate the safety of the home.
• Check tripping hazards in the home. Rugs, furniture and other things on the floor can be dangerous if in the main walking path.

• Maintain your vision. Vision impairments can impair balance and your ability to see things that may cause you to trip. Be sure to have your eyes checked regularly.
• Talk to an aide or home care nurse about fall prevention programs in your area to find out if there are strengthening exercises you can do to help keep you safe.
• Have a Home Safety Evaluation done by a Crittenton Home Care nurse. An evaluation is a great way to receive tips and recommendations on ways to keep your home safer and more efficient. From grab bars to shower chairs or ramps, a nurse will assess what things could be a fall risk and how to fix them.
