Ikebana, the Art of Japanese Floral Arrangements

The Rochester Garden Club is pleased to present a demonstration of ikebana, the art of Japanese floral arrangements by Cheryl Linck, past president of the Ikebana International Chapter of Detroit.  Ikebana is an art form developed over 600 years ago, originally to enhance religious practices, but over time the arrangements have graced homes and public spaces throughout Japan.  The practice of ikebana has a spiritual aspect, as designers strive to suggest the whole of nature by creating a link between the natural and manmade environments.  Ikebana uses asymmetrical form, incorporates empty space into the design and seeks to harmonize the natural materials and container.

Cheryl has been a practitioner of ikebana for many years and has demonstrated and exhibited her designs at the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center.
