Madrigal Chorale Rejoices Love in Every Form

Detroit-based organization hosts concert to encourage community with silent auction to benefit local school choral programs

In a time of intense political tension and community divide, Madrigal Chorale will present Visions of Love, a concert celebrating compassion and human connection. The century-old chorale will be performing "music to warm the heart" on Sunday, Feb. 12 at 4 p.m. at St. John Fisher Chapel (3665 E. Walton Blvd.).

"Our Visions of Love and [Visions of] Peace performances are quite timely," said Dr. Robert A. Martin, the Chorale’s Artistic Director since 1992. "These were some of the things gnawing at us. If there’s an ingredient we need in these times of vitriol and hatred, it’s love."

Madrigal Chorale has a history of communicating resonant messages in times of need. Last season, the group’s commitment to social justice and artistic excellence fueled concerts exploring religious and racial reconciliation. Their upcoming performance will center on the varying types of love that can bring people together, a message soon shared across the country with an invited return to Carnegie Hall on Sunday, Apr. 9.

Martin and the Chorale will use the event to support local arts education, offering three scholarships to class B, C and D schools in the tri-county area courtesy of a silent auction before and after the performance.

"A lot of the local districts are cutting the budgets," said Martin. "This means less money to purchase music and supplies. We want to encourage education and singing, and we wanted to give back to students who wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity."

The scholarships are part of the Choral Competition Scholarship Fund, inviting underfunded choral programs to submit audition tapes and compete for three $1,000 prizes. The silent auction will offer such items as sporting event tickets, restaurant gift packages, themed gift baskets and original art. Light refreshments will be served by members of the Chorale.

Visions of Love marks the middle of Madrigal Chorale’s season, followed by their return to Carnegie Hall alongside the Stacey V. Gibbs Chorale. Their Visions of Peace program, a performance emphasizing safety and comfort, will close out their season on Sunday, May 21 in Novi.
