METRO DETROIT — Three districts in metro Detroit are scheduled to hold special primary elections on Tuesday for three vacant state house seats. The winners will advance to the special general election on May 3. The winners of the general election will serve until Dec. 31, and then can run for re-election to the seat under the state's new redistricted congressional maps. Polls will be open Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Two Democratic candidates will face off in the special primary for Michigan's 15th district house seat, which contains most of Dearborn. The seat became vacant after Democratic former State Rep. Abdullah Hammoud was elected mayor in Dearborn in November 2021. The district leans heavily Democratic, and the winner will face Republican Ginger Shearer in a May 3 special general election.

Four Republican candidates will battle in a tough Macomb County district that heavily leans Republican. The state's 36th house district became vacant after Republican Douglas Wozniak was elected to the state senate in November 2021. The district contains portions of Bruce Township, Washington Township, and part of Shelby Charter Township. The winner will face Democrat Jim Diez in a May 3 special general election.
