Oakland University earns statewide recognition for supporting student veterans

OU achieved the silver-level designation on the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency's 2015-2016 list of Veteran-Friendly Schools.

Oakland University is among select colleges and universities in Michigan being recognized for the exceptional support services it provides to student veterans. The Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency recently released its 2015-2016 list of “Veteran-Friendly Schools,” which recognizes institutions of higher learning for their dedication to student veterans and dependents utilizing their G.I. Bill and other educational benefits.

Based on a variety of factors, the 57 schools on the list were grouped into three levels of recognition: bronze, silver and gold. Oakland is one of the 20 schools to receive a silver-level designation, fulfilling five out of seven evaluation criteria. These included having an on-campus veteran services coordinator; an active, student-operated veteran club/association; an established process for the identification of current student veterans; evaluation and awarding of credit for military training and experience; and a veteran-specific website portal.

“As an institution committed to our active and retired service members, as well as their dependents, we want to provide as many service opportunities for those who give and have given so much to our country,” said Steve Shablin, OU Registrar. “I am proud of our faculty and staff who provide support on a daily basis.”
