Oakland University partnering with Henry Ford College for 2015 Camp RN

Spots are available for this year's Camp RN program, which takes place July 13-17 at Henry Ford College in Dearborn.

Middle school students who want to know what it takes to become a health care professional should attend CampRN@Henry Ford College in Dearborn, Mich. Oakland University School of Nursing and Henry Ford College’s Nursing program have collaborated to develop a unique, hands-on experience for motivated students.

With the shortage of nurses and a wider variety of career choices for students, Oakland University and Henry Ford College hope to get students excited about the nursing profession. Space is limited, however, as the camp accepts only 25 students in grades 7-9. Camp RN will take place July 13-17 on the campus of Henry Ford College in Dearborn. The cost to attend the camp is $235.

Campers will engage in classes like anatomy and physiology while learning fundamentals such as CPR and First Aid. Participants will tour Henry Ford College, participate in learning activities with skilled nurses at Oakwood Hospital and learn about the human body in the physical assessment lab. This popular camp has been held at Oakland University for the past eight years. OU nursing leaders say that holding this year’s camp at Henry Ford College allows the program to expand its reach.

“Partnering with Henry Ford College will allow us to reach young students who live in the Dearborn area and typically do not have access to Oakland University due to the distance,” said interim Assistant Dean for Student Services, Dr. Kristina Aaron. “This program will allow students in the Henry Ford College area to participate in a pre-college program that introduces them to the sciences related to a career in nursing.”

Qualifications to attend the camp include a 3.0 GPA, letters of recommendation and a personal statement identifying the student’s goals for the future.
