Paul Miller: 'I'll Support Whoever Is Elected Mayor'

The mayoral candidate reflects on his campaign and on voter turnout.

Paul Miller said Wednesday that he feels good about the campaign he led to be mayor of Rochester Hills.

What he wasn't feeling so great about the day after Primary Election Day was the voter turnout.

Only 13.8 percent of registered voters cast a vote in his city.

"I thought we would have had greater voter turnout than we did," said who came in third place Tuesday, behind and challenger , in his bid for the city's top leadership spot.

"What's clear to me is that we have our work cut out for us to bring the community into the political discussion," he said.

"People are turned off by 'politics as usual,' " he said. "I think with the situation of the budget in Washington, there is an increased feeling of helplessness that individuals feel.

"It's disheartening, really. It's amazing to me how many people did not know it was an election year in the city."

Miller came in third of four candidates who vied for two spots on the November ballot. He received 527 votes. Barnett, who has been the city's leader since 2006, received 5,316 votes; Ambrozaitis received 754 votes. Candidate , a recent high school graduate, received 101 votes.

On Wednesday, Miller said he was feeling good about himself and the campaign.

"I'm truly appreciative and somewhat humbled by the support we've gotten from people," he said.

"I hope I helped increase awareness of some of the issues this city will be facing in the future."

Miller said he would not be endorsing Barnett or Ambrozaitis but added, "I will support whoever is elected mayor."
