Require restaurants to label the top 8 food allergens and possible cross contamination on their menu items. In addition, list the allergens in marinades, sauces, dressings and oils that are purchased and/or prepared on site

Not all restaurant staff know what's in the food there serving. By labeling food allergens, it can minimize serious allergic reactions.

A scary incident that happened while dining out with our food allergic son has motivated our family to seek improvements in the way food allergens are labeled on restaurant menus. We have created a petition and we are seeking the help of legislators that will make dining out safer for those living with life threatening food allergies by conspicuously labeling the food items that contain the top 8 food allergens.

“Studies report that approximately half of fatal food allergy reactions are triggered by food consumed outside the home”

This proposal will help minimize error and mis-communications among restaurant staff, and thereby help reduce hospitalizations and senseless deaths due to allergic reactions. Just like the foods items we purchase in grocery stores that list allergens, food items in restaurants are no different. By using simple recognizable icons such as a peanut or a symbol of a milk carton or cow for dairy can take the guessing game out of the ordering process and reduces errors that are made by restaurant operators, cooks, and wait staff, that usually don’t know the complete list of ingredients of the food items they serve.
