Volunteers Supported Pontiac Senior Center For Lowes Hometowns Program

PONTIAC, MI (December 13, 2023) – Volunteers from Bloomfield Lowe’s and the City of Pontiac teamed up to support Red Vest Day at Ruth Peterson Senior Center, which is one of 100 community projects in 2023 that make up Lowe’s Hometowns Launched in 2022. Lowe’s Hometowns is the company’s largest-ever impact program, with a five-year, $100 million commitment from Lowe’s to rebuild and revitalize community spaces nationwide.

The event was a day where volunteers painted the senior center’s kitchen walls for residents who are actively involved with the facility. This will add a better quality of life for senior citizens attending Ruth Peterson. The upgrade will add to other improvements that has already taken place at the senior center.

“We’re extremely grateful for the partnership with Lowe’s and the additional support from their Bloomfield staff who volunteered their time on Red Vest Day,” said Deputy Mayor Khalfani Stephens. “Lowe’s Hometowns Community Impact Program not only improves the kitchen at the Ruth Peterson Senior Center, but ensures our seniors have access to the amenities and resources they deserve. This is the perfect example of the spirit of giving!”

Pontiac utilized these funds to renovate and provide commercial-grade cooking equipment to the kitchen area at the Ruth Peterson Senior Center. Additional upgrades will soon include new refrigerators, food forming stations, ovens, stoves, salad bar station, and floor replacement. The facility and the kitchen have been in disrepair for several months, so the improvements will go a long way toward providing quality, nutritious meals for Pontiac’s elderly residents.

This center supports many local seniors who face severe income restraints. In addition, the Ruth Peterson and Robert Bowens Senior Centers were among Pontiac’s primary operating facilities during the recent pandemic. The centers were the city’s hub for community initiatives such as “Meals on Wheels”, vaccine information, and food distribution in the area. Lowes improvement project was a much-needed enhancement to the senior center.

This year’s Lowe’s Hometowns projects were selected from 93 communities across 41 states and Washington, D.C., and will address needs specific to each community, from housing and community centers to outdoor spaces and facilities for first responders and veterans. Each project will receive a grant from Lowe’s to make physical improvements that help local organizations continue to make a meaningful impact in their communities. At the core of this commitment are Lowe’s red vest associates, who share a passion for giving back to their communities and provide support to every Lowe’s Hometowns project.

Now in the second year of the initiative, Lowe’s Hometowns invites nonprofits and community members to share stories of projects in need. City of Pontiac is partnering with local Lowe’s associates, construction pros, and impact partner Points of Light to complete this project.
