2 Royal Oak Schools in Bottom Half of State Ranking
Keller, Northwood, and Addams are the highest of Royal Oak schools. Oakland and Upton are below 50th percentile in annual "top to bottom" list.
Three-quarters of Royal Oaks schools ranked among the top 50 percent of schools in the state, according to the Michigan Department of Education's Top-To-Bottom Rankings, which were released Friday.
Two Royal Oak schools are in the bottom half of the list, Oakland Elementary, which was in the 40th percentile, and Upton Elementary, at 37th percentile. The 40th percentile means 40 percent of the schools in the state rank below that school.
The ranking is part of an annual list that factors students' performance on standardized tests in all five academic subjects, graduation rates, student improvement, and other Michigan Department of Education guidelines, such as those that determine Adequate Yearly Progress.

Only public schools are included in the list. This is the second year that the education department has published an overall "top to bottom" ranking along with the required list of low-achieving schools.
is ranked in the top 90th percentile of all Michigan schools. Also ranked near the top are (89th percentile) and (86th percentile).

There are no consequences of the annual ranking, but the education department suggests districts use the results as a diagnostic tool to determine where resources are needed.
On Aug. 15, gave all Royal Oak schools an A, with the exception of Royal Oak High School, which earned a B for 2010-11.
