$4.6B Transit System Would Connect Detroit to Ann Arbor: Public Meetings

Average homeowner would pay about $7.92 more a month under plan that must be approved in Nov. 8 election.

Wayne, Oakland, Macomb and Washtenaw counties would be connected under a new $4.6 billion public transportation system that would add more bus lines, connect Detroit and Ann Arbor with new rail, and increase access to airport services..

The Regional Transit Authority unveiled the new southeast Michigan transportation system at a Tuesday morning news conference at Lawrence Technical University in Southfield.

The plan is subject to voter approval in the Nov. 8, 2016, general election.

Voters will be asked to approve a millage rate of 1.2 mills for 20 years (2017-2036) to help pay for the transit system, which could also receive state and federal funding. The average homeowner would pay an additional $7.92 a month to pay for the system.
