Accused Cake-Kicker Now Alleged Ice Cream-Slapper

Irate woman allegedly slapped manager when Royal Oak ice cream shop didn't have the flavor of ice cream she wanted.

ROYAL OAK, MI — More trouble is brewing for accused Bloomfield Township cake kicker Tricia Kortes, who was charged Thursday in connection with a 2015 incident in which she allegedly slapped the manager of a Royal Oak ice cream shop because it was out of the flavor she wanted to order, police said.

Kortes, who turned herself into Royal Oak police Thursday morning, was arraigned on an assault and battery charges in connection with an incident at Ray’s Ice Cream shop on July 9, 2015, the Royal Oak Police Department said in a news release.

Police said the manager of the ice cream shop came forward after recognizing Kortes, 46, in media accounts of the bizarre incident in June, when she allegedly drop-kicked her son’s “Batman v. Superman” themed birthday cake in a Bloomfield Township Kroger store.

In that incident, Bloomfield Township police said she was unimpressed with the decorating superpowers on a “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice” cake she’d ordered for her son’s birthday party in June, and attempted to go behind the bakery counter to fix it.

When employees stopped Kortes, her temper — and the cake — flew, police said.

“This infuriated the woman, causing her to take the cake to the front of the counter and ‘drop kick’ it,” Bloomfield Township police Det. Sgt. John Weise said at the time. “The action caused pieces of cake and frosting to be strewn about the bakery section of the store. The woman quickly left the store, kicking over a wet floor sign on her way out.”

Kortes was arraigned in Royal Oak’s 44th District Court after turning herself in. Judge Derek Meinecke set bond at $1,000/10 percent. Her next court is 9:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 12, also in 44th District Court. She was also barred from contacting anyone at the Royal Oak ice cream shop.

If convicted, she could face up to 93 days in jail and a $500 fine.

Kortes has had trouble controlling her temper before. Just days before her meltdown at the Kroger store, a judge in Troy had required her to attend anger management classes after she pleaded no-contest to a disorderly conduct charge stemming from a fight with a co-worker in Troy, The Birmingham Eccentric reported. In that incident, she was accused of shoving and hitting her colleague with a cellphone.

WXYZ-TV reported that Kortes was placed on probation for a 2003 assault charge in King County, Washington.

Her attorney, Gerald Gleeson, declined to talk about the Troy and Washington State incidents, but told the TV station that the cake-kicking incident “has been blown out of proportion” and that his client was seeking counseling. He said again Thursday that Kortes is participating in counseling, WWJ reports.
