ROYAL OAK TOWNSHIP, MI — An ambulance crashed Saturday at an Oakland County intersection while carrying a head trauma patient, according to Michigan State Police.
Police said the ambulance was moving the patient with its lights and sirens activated at 7:20 p.m. when it slammed into the passenger side of the BMW on westbound 8 Mile Road and Wyoming Avenue in Royal Oak Township.
After the crash, the ambulance overturned and slid before coming to a rest on its driver’s side, police said.

The driver of the BMW and the trauma patient possibly suffered minor internal injuries in the crash, police said. Officials said the two paramedics who were inside the ambulance were not injured in the crash.
The trauma patient, who had a pre-existing head injury, was trapped inside the rig and actively bleeding from the prior injury, police said.

Troopers rendered first aid by jumping into the ambulance, holding c-spine and administering trauma gauze to control bleeding until another ambulance arrived to take them to the hospital, police said.
The patient’s condition was not known Monday.
Troopers were on a traffic stop at 8 Mile and Wyoming intersection Saturday evening when the ambulance crashed and were on the scene "seconds after it occurred," police said.
Although the ambulance had its lights and sirens activated, police said it failed to clear the intersection before driving through it. Officials said the BMW had the green light.
