Autism Speaks and the Autism Alliance of Michigan today announced their partnership with Arts, Beats and Eats. The annual festival, which takes place over Labor Day Weekend, will host Inclusive Family Days during this year’s event.
On both Saturday and Monday mornings the festival will open up early to allow families with members affected by Autism exclusive, complimentary access to rides, activities, food and more in a safe environment. These Inclusive Family Days were created as an opportunity to raise awareness of Autism and to create opportunities for families to experience the event without trepidation.
“This is an incredible opportunity for families who have a child with autism. Many times, large community events, like Arts, Beats & Eats, can be too overwhelming for someone affected by ASD and therefore making it extremely difficult for a family to enjoy,” said Dr. Colleen Allen, CEO Autism Alliance of Michigan. “Opening Arts, Beats & Eats early and providing complimentary admission, parking, food and games will allow families to have a fun and safe festival experience minimizing the typical concerns they face day to day.”

As part of the festivities Arts, Beats and Eats will be named an official “Michigan is Listening Destination.” This honor is given to attractions and events throughout the state that have created experiences and environments that are conducive to individuals on the spectrum.
Additionally, it is a sign of a commitment to raise awareness of Autism, which affects 1 in 88 children.

“We are honored to add Arts, Beats and Eats to the Michigan is Listening roster,” said Tom Riopelle, Midwest Regional Director, Autism Speaks. “The event and its organizers’ commitment to families with autism is a benchmark we hope will encourage other events of this nature to follow suit in both raising awareness and creating enjoyable experiences for families.”
Volunteers during the Inclusive Family Days hours will undergo special training with Autism Alliance of Michigan to ensure the safety of everyone in attendance.
In addition to the Inclusive Family Days, both Autism Speaks and Autism Alliance of Michigan will be recipients of proceeds of gate sales throughout the entire Arts, Beats and Eats weekend.
