Award-Winning Nature Photographer to Speak in Royal Oak

This month the South Oakland Art Association will explore the small world of Mike Moats – the award-winning professional nature photographer who shoots the small and shows it big. Moats is nationally known for his macro photography books. His first book, released in 2008, was called Tiny Landscapes. The book is a how-to for macro photography in nature.

“I started shooting as a hobby in 2001 and it quickly grew into a full time business," said Moats. "To date I’ve had articles and images published in magazines such as Outdoor Photographer, Natures Best, PC Photo, Nature Photographer Magazine, Photolife, Whisper in the Woods, Michigan Game Finder, NANPA’s Expressions Books, PureMichigan Book and Fujifilms Newsletter.”  

He has written articles for Tamron’s blog and had two images make the front covers.

Moats has won numerous local, national, and international awards.  n 2006, he was asked to join the Fuji Pro Talent Team, and in 2009 was added as a Macro Master on the Tamron Website.

“It is obvious we are going to have a special event when Mike talks about and shows us his accomplishments. This is a ‘can’t miss’ opportunity for nature lovers, photographers and artists,” said Janet Wharry, president of the SOAA.

The meeting will be at the , 814 N. Campbell, in Royal Oak on Jan. 9 at 7 p.m.  The church is on the east side of North Campbell Road between 11 and 12 Mile roads. The entrance and lighted free parking are on the north side of the church. 

In 2006, Moats started offering Close-Up/Macro Photography Workshops.  He has also written four e-books and has three daylong “Macro Boot Camps” throughout cities in the United States.
