Michigan One of Laziest States in the Country: Study

Website ranks all 50 states on hours worked, commute time, and other factors. Maryland and Virginia are tops.

METRO DETROIT, MI – Michigan is filled with slackers.

A according to a new study released by Zippia.com, a website devoted to data analysis regarding careers in America, ranked all 50 states in order of hardest working.

Michigan ranked 48th, just above Kentucky and New Mexico. Top honors went to Maryland, followed by Virginia, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Colorado, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Alaska, Texas and North Dakota.

Zippia used data from the American Community Survey and Census Bureau to come up with its ranking.

Don’t take it too badly, though. While Maryland residents work an average of 38 hours a week, Michigan residents work only slightly fewer hours — 37.5.

The difference can be explained in the other criteria used to compile the ranking.

  • Average hours worked
  • Average commute time
  • Workers per household (Employed labor force divided by the number households)
  • Labor force participation rate
  • Adults with a college degree
