Mom Accused of Driving Drunk with 3 Kids in Car in Ferndale Court Thursday

Police found an empty bottle of schnapps, a half full bottle and a cup half full of the liquor when mom was stopped for speeding.

FERNDALE, MI — An Eastpointe mom charged with drunken driving while her three children were in the back seat of the car is due in Ferndale 43rd District Court Thursday for a pre-trial hearing.

Nicole Webb, 28, was stopped for speeding by Ferndale police about 2:30 a.m. on Aug. 9 on Eight Mile Road, The Daily Tribune reported. When police searched her vehicle, they found an empty bottle of apple schnapps, as well as a half-full bottle and half-full cup of the same liquor, Ferndale Detective Brendan Moore said.

Only one of the three children, a 1-year-old, was strapped in a safety seat. The others, ages 4 and 3, should have been, but weren't, according to the report.

Webb failed sobriety tests with a blood alcohol content of 0.12 percent, above the 0.08 legal threshold for drunken driving in Michigan.

Webb was allegedly driving 17 miles per hour over the posted speed limit of 40 miles per hour. “When the officer asked her why she was driving so fast she said she was trying to get to her ex-boyfriend’s house with the children,” Webb told the newspaper.

The three children were turned over to their grandmother and Webb was booked. She was arraigned in court on charges of driving under the influence with a child under 16 and driving with open intoxicants in the car and driving on a suspended license. She also was wanted by authorities in Detroit for failure to appear in court on a traffic violation, police said.
