Motown Museum Conducts First Annual Motown EDU Spark Summer Camp
10-day camp open to deserving metropolitan Detroit students designed to educate and inspire artistic children with an entrepreneurial spirit
Motown Museum announced today it will host its first annual Motown Museum SPARK summer camp, which is open to metropolitan Detroit area students between the ages of 8 and 12. The camp will be held July 30-August 10 at the Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s Max M. Fisher Music Center. Robin R. Terry, Chairwoman and CEO of the Board of Trustees of Motown Museum, made the announcement.
The Motown Museum SPARK Summer Camp will incorporate workshops and experiences designed to cultivate talent, expose students to different musical genres and cultures, teach lessons in teamwork and collaboration, encourage creativity and self-expression, and develop comfort and confidence in a performance setting. Some of the exciting activities will include students making their own instruments, drum circle sessions, songwriting and lyric composition, and teambuilding games.
During the camp, students will learn the basics of singing, songwriting, instrumental performance, production, beatmaking, dancing/choreography, and more, giving them the opportunity to focus on their talents in an inspiring, historic and artistic environment. Campers will experience the power of music while seeing firsthand that there is room for everyone in the arts. They will have the opportunity to collaborate with other campers and discover the tools needed for them to find their creative spark.

“Over the past five years, we have received an overwhelmingly positive response to our Motown IGNITE summer camp for metro Detroit high school students that we decided to launch a new summer camp—Motown SPARK—that would be specifically geared toward younger students,” said Terry. “As we remain committed to serving as an educational platform focused on fostering the cornerstones of Motown’s success and providing opportunities for emerging talent to harness the power of their own talents, skills and abilities, it was important that we expanded our summer camp program to appeal to a broader range of students. We are excited to invite these students to this one-of-a-kind experience this summer.”
Motown SPARK accepts a limited number of students. With an application fee of only $20, sponsors will provide an automatic scholarship to each attendee to cover other camp related costs. Those interested can download an application and submit the $20 fee at http://www.MotownMuseum.org/Motown-EDU, pick one up from Motown Museum or call (248) 225-6265. Applications should be returned to Motown Museum at 2648 West Grand Blvd, Detroit 48208 or emailed to MotownEDU@MotownMuseum.org by Friday, June 15, 2018.
