Motown Museum to Host Black Legacy Program Event
Event to highlight Black family businesses in the City of Detroit in honor of Black History Month
The Motown Museum announced today that it will host a Black Legacy Program public event celebrating Black family owned and operated businesses in Detroit and honoring the entrepreneurial legacy of the Gordy family on Wednesday, February 28 in honor of Black History Month. Motown Museum Chairwoman and CEO Robin Terry made the announcement.
During the event, which will take place from 6-8 p.m. at TechTown, located at 440 Burroughs St, attendees will hear a brief history of the Gordy family's migration to Detroit and how maintaining a family-first business helped shape the Motown Records Company. In addition, three successful Black family owned and operated businesses in Detroit will share with guests their business successes and failures, business advice and their core family values that have helped shape and sustain their businesses. Paul Riser, managing director of TechTown, will serve as moderator for the discussion and will offer expert business advice.
"Although the music of Motown has helped to shape the City of Detroit, it is important to remember the business brilliance and entrepreneurial efficacy born from the Gordy family that continues to inspire generations today," said Terry. "As we were thinking of ways to celebrate Black History Month with our community, we thought there would be no better way than to honor the Gordy family history, celebrate members of Detroit's Black business community and give those interested in pursuing business ownership the chance to learn from successful business owners."
The businesses participating in the discussion include:
