New Location for Public Hearing on Royal Oak City Hall

Due to a conflict with the school district, the location for May 24 Town Hall meeting has been changed.

ROYAL OAK, MI – City officials have moved a planned town hall meeting on the proposed Royal Oak Civic Center to the Churchill Community Education Center due to a scheduling conflict at Royal Oak Middle School, the original location.

The town hall meeting is from 6-9 p.m. on Tuesday, May 24. Churchill Community Education Center is located at 707 Girard Ave.

Residents will have an opportunity to hear and comment on details of the proposal to sell the current city hall and police station building to a private developer for a retail and office building, build a new police station, increase downtown parking and create a large downtown park.

Royal Oak City Hall would occupy two floors of the reconfigured building, and a new $18 million police station would be built in the parking lot of the Royal Oak Farmers Market, next door to 44th District Court. Farmers Market operations will not be affected.

Mayor Jim Ellison said at a recent meeting that the proposal meets several city goals, including meeting the needs of local retailers.

“It’s going to be a boost to retailers and it’s going to add more parking (spaces), which we need,” he said last month.
