Royal Oak History: Union School Bell on Display

A restored school bell is on display on the Royal Oak Historical Society Museum.

A 102-year-old bell that served the Union School, which opened in 1902 and  contained all grades, is now on display.

The Union School was located at Lincoln and Washington where the parking structure now sits. The bell also served Washington Elementary when that school replaced Union School at the same location in 1924. Washington was closed in 1975.

The bell apparently bounced around for a while and and has been stored at the (DPS), "for at least 15 years," according to Greg Rassel, director of the DPS.

A DPS crew recently stripped the bell of peeling gold paint, restored its appearance, then mounted it outside the decommissioned Northwood Fire Station which now houses the .

The Historical Society Museum is open 1 - 4 p.m. each Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Group visits may be arranged.
