Royal Oak Kindergartners Predict an Early Spring

Will the groundhog see his shadow this year? Students in Jennifer Bissel's kindergarten class at Northwood Elementary predict he will not.

Every year on Feb. 2 Groundhog Day is celebrated. On that day, the groundhog comes out of its burrow and checks for its shadow to determine how soon spring will arrive.

According to tradition, if groundhogs see their shadow, they will be frightened and want to run back into their burrow, and six more weeks of winter will follow. If they don't, spring is around the corner.

Bissel read students a story of how it is that the groundhog has the big job of forecasting the weather and then students made predictions of their own. 

The final tally

A total of 16 students predicted the groundhog will not see his shadow, thus an early spring, while seven students are crossing their fingers for sunny skies on Saturday, which they hope means more snow in the near future for sledding!
