Royal Oak Native, Marine Killed In Training Accident: Officials

The crash happened Tuesday at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton​ in California, according to​ Marine Corps officials​.

ROYAL OAK, MI — A Royal Oak man was identified as the Marine who was killed in a Tuesday crash at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton in California, according to Marine Corps officials.

Sgt. Matthew K. Bylski, 23, died after an amphibious combat vehicle, or ACV, rolled over during a training exercise at the Southern California base, officials said.

Another 14 Marines were also injured in the crash and taken to nearby hospitals, officials said.

One was still in the hospital but in good condition on Thursday, while the others were treated and released, officials said.

The rollover happened as the vehicle was making a ground movement during training, officials said.

"Words fail to express our sorrow at the tragic loss of Sgt. Bylski; an outstanding Marine and a leader within his platoon," Commanding Officer of the 15th MEU Col. Sean Dynan said. "The MEU – the Marines who lived, trained, and learned from Sgt. Bylski, mourn alongside his family and friends. The entire 15th MEU 'Vanguard' family is affected by his absence."

Bylski was trained as an Amphibious Combat Vehicle crewman and was assigned to Battalion Landing Team 1/5, 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit, serving as a vehicle commander, officials said.

He joined the Marine Corps in January 2019.

His awards and decorations include:

  • Global War on Terrorism Service Medal
  • Sea Service Deployment Ribbon

Bylski grew up in Royal Oak and is a 2018 graduate of Hazel Park Schools, according to the district.

The Hazel Park School District released their own statement about the former student's death on Wednesday, referring to Bylski as "a true hero."

“He was a real special kid,” his father, Ken, said in the statement.

"He was always willing to help anyone out," his brother Josh said via Hazel Park Schools. "He was so compassionate. He was always upbeat and would do anything he could to bring you out of a bad situation and put you in a better mindset."
