Royal Oak's Famous Couple Dressed Up for Holidays

Royal Oak's centerpiece sculpture, "The Star Dream Fountain," has taken on a whimsical look for the holidays.

The 40-foot male and female bronze statues in Royal Oak’s “Star Dream Fountain,” who don’t wear anything at all, are now sporting 4-foot nylon Santa hats that weigh about 30 pounds each. The Department of Public Services capped the famous couple Wednesday.

“The Star Dream” was created by Royal Oak-based artist Marshall M. Fredericks, who died at the age of 90 in 1998, a year after the sculpture was installed in the Barbara A. Hallman Memorial Plaza.

The Santa hats caught the attention of the Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum at Saginaw Valley University, University Center.

The museum’s collection spans the 70-year career of Fredericks, the Royal Oak-based artist who created the bronze sculpture and saw it installed in the Barbara A. Hallman Memorial Plaza a year before he died in 1998 at the age of 90.

The museum asked the city for permission to use the photo of the bronze figures in “The Star Dream” wearing 4-foot nylon Santa hats that weigh about 30 pounds each. The Department of Public Services capped the famous couple Wednesday.

The capping created an interesting discussion on the city’s Facebook page. Check it out here.
