📰 News we're reading

1. New Saginaw restaurant, Bay City gift shop among big winners in Michigan small business grants (mlive.com) — A new Old Town restaurant, The Brunch Guy on North Hamilton, just landed a $25,000 state grant to help it grow, putting fresh investment right into Saginaw’s downtown. The award comes through Michigan’s Match on Main program, which also backed a Bay City shop and dozens of other small businesses statewide, after a competitive application process.

2. MSP: Public will not notice changes with trooper patrols reduced in Flint, Saginaw (abc12.com) — State police are scaling back daily trooper patrols in Saginaw after years of bolstering the city’s force, but officials insist residents shouldn’t notice a drop in crime-fighting. Troopers will still work in the city, with staffing shifted toward higher-crime times like weekends and the Major Case Unit remaining in place.

3. Mosquito-borne diseases detected in Midland, Bay and Saginaw counties (wnem.com) — Mosquitoes in Saginaw County and neighboring Midland and Bay counties have tested positive for Jamestown Canyon virus, and officials say West Nile is likely present even if not yet detected locally. Saginaw County Mosquito Abatement is ramping up spraying and urging residents to dump standing water, use repellent, and even bring in old tires for free disposal.

4. Tracked And Terminated: VA Employee's Speeding Data Outweighs Her Whistleblower Defense (fedsmith.com) — A federal appeals court has upheld the firing of a probationary VA supply technician at the Saginaw medical center after telematics data showed repeated speeding in a government vehicle. Judges agreed she made protected workplace complaints but ruled the VA proved it would have terminated her anyway based solely on the documented driving violations.

5. Michigan's top high school football receivers: Meet the best Division 5 WRs and TEs in 2026 (mlive.com) — Saginaw-area fans will want to watch Swan Valley senior receiver/defensive back Kamdyn Reynolds, who’s highlighted among Michigan’s top Division 5 pass-catchers after a huge 2025 season.
