Salvation Army of Washtenaw County Announces Holiday Giving Opportunities

Donations of toys, clothes and gifts will benefit local families in need. Here's how yu can help.

The Salvation Army of Washtenaw County is seeking the support of compassionate community members in helping provide Christmas to those who otherwise might go without this year, according to a news release.

Adopt-a-Family

Any individual, family, business, school group, church or other organization can sponsor a family in need through the Adopt-a-Family program which runs through Friday, Dec. 13.

Sponsors provide families with a Christmas (and/or Thanksgiving) dinner, gifts and clothing for children and household items.

The Salvation Army of Washtenaw County will match families with sponsors based on support level and need.

Sponsors can also choose to adopt a local senior citizen.

The local charity started the Adopt-a-Family program with just 60 families in 2008, but need has continued to increase and the nonprofit expects to serve up to 200 families this year.

Angel Tree

Washtenaw County community members are encouraged to pull a tag marked with a local child’s age, gender, size and suggested gifts from specially decorated Angel Trees located throughout the county. All new, unwrapped toys can be returned to the store and placed in an Angel Tree bin by Monday, Dec. 16. Angel Trees can be found at these establishments:

  • Briarwood Mall – multiple locations throughout the mall in Ann Arbor
  • Flagstar Bank – available beginning Friday, Nov. 22 at all locations in Ann Arbor and Chelsea
  • University of Michigan – Student Union and Michigan League Building

Donated gifts for infants through 17-year-olds will be available to parents who’ve registered for holiday assistance through The Salvation Army of Washtenaw County toy shops, where they can select Christmas gifts for their children.

WAAM 1600 Toy Drive

For the seventh consecutive year, The Salvation Army of Washtenaw County and WAAM Talk Radio 1600 are partnering to collect β€œ1,600 Toys for 1,600 Girls and Boys.”

Through Friday, Dec. 13, community members can donate new, unwrapped toys for infants through 14-year-olds at collection boxes located at businesses throughout Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti. Gifts for β€œtweens” and teens, such as sporting equipment, clothing and fashion accessories, are especially needed.
